Hirono, The Other One
We’ve heard much about Kamala Harris’s “mainstream” immigrant story for the past few months. But what does that mean? Is it just making sure she’s not a white supremacist or something? And where does Hirono fit into all this? Let me tell you: Hirono has a very mainstream immigrant story too!

You’re the only one who can hold this office.
You are the other one to come from where I come from, and you’ve had experiences I haven’t had.
Hirono is from Hawaii, a state in the United States. Hawaii is not an island, and it’s not a country. It’s also not a continent; it’s part of Oceania, which refers to all islands between Asia and Australia (and sometimes beyond).
As a woman of color, it’s important to me that you know my story. I am not the only one who has had these experiences, there are many more people like me.
I grew up in a family where my mother was the only child of her parents, and they both worked hard to provide for us while they raised their other children.
When I was in high school, my mother got a job as an intern at an organization that helped mothers with their children’s education after school hours during summer breaks or weekends when schools were closed due to weather conditions or other issues such as power outages due to storms coming through town which would disrupt classes for days at a time until repairs could be made by utility companies so that classes could resume properly again without interruption (which happened many times over).
I want to ensure that people understand that she is a mainstream immigrant story. She has had the experiences that she has had, and we need to recognize her as the only one who can hold this office.
Hirono is the first Japanese-American senator. She was born in Hawaii, and her family was interned during World War II. She grew up in Hawaii before moving to California at age 18 with her father after his military service ended.
I am Hirono, the other one, from where I come from and have had your experiences. I want to make sure that people understand that when it comes to our country’s future and making sure we keep moving forward as a nation, there is no other option but me.
This is a long-form essay.
